Let me start by saying, if I am lucky enough to get pregnant again, Kari will be the second call I make after telling my mom.
She was an instrumental part in the reason why I had such a successful natural birth. My husband and I have no family in the area, so it was such a relief to be able to rely one someone else in the moment that we both trusted to calm our anxieties. She was a soothing presences and helped my husband help me work through the waves of labor.
My ideal was to have a natural labor. For some reason in the moment I was so afraid of doing anything that involved drugs, that I relied on Kari to tell me it was okay.
We had a perfect and sweet baby boy. I strongly believe if Kari wasn't there, we would have not had the positive experience that we did.
My husband and I didn’t plan on having a doula. Our birthing team was going to be my husband and my sister. It wasn’t until just a few weeks before my due date that we decided it would be a good idea to have more support in the birthing process. None of us had much experience and as we got closer to the birthing day, the thought of having someone with us to normalize and offer support, not only for me, but also for David and my sister, began to feel like a really good idea.
We called the Swedish doula program. The woman who took the call asked very specific questions about David and I as a couple as well as what we were hoping for. She quickly sent us references for a handful of doula’s she felt would be a good fit. Kari’s profile, and the way she came across online, resonated with David and me so we decided to set up an interview.
The first couple of visits with Kari were very grounding for me. I had a sense that she would offer a calming and supportive presence to all of us. It was clear to me that she would be able to attune to the needs of the moment and shift with the unknowns of whatever came up.
As the weeks unfolded, the unexpected became the name of the game for our birth experience. Kari was a support all along the way as we waited and hoped that my body would go naturally into labor. I was almost 2 weeks overdue when my doctor decided to induce. The process did not go smoothly and as our spirits started to sink with the start stop loop of my labor. We decided to call Kari in for support. She came with her calm, her steady hand, and her grounding kindness. She was a voice of reassurance when I felt lost, she offered her wisdom as we wrestled with the possibility of a cesarean, and she was the voice I listened to—right by my ear—in the OR as my baby boy was born via c-section. Kari’s face and presence were such a steadying force for us. I cannot imagine those days without her in them.
Kari was our doula through Swedish Hospital for the birth of our daughter. This was our first child so we were very nervous and also did not have any idea what we were doing! Kari was great- she really listened to what our hopes and expectations were for the birth. I liked her style because she seemed professional and assertive. I felt confident that she could advocate for me during the labor if needed. Kari was really helpful during our labor, she gave me space when I needed it, but also was ready to jump in and make some really helpful suggestions when I was hitting a rough patch. And even when plans ultimately had to change to a C-section (which was NOT in our birth plan!), Kari was really supportive of our decision and helped me deal with the anxiety of surgery. We had a great experience with Kari and would definitely reccomended her as a doula!
Hiring a doula was the best decision and Kari was amazing! This was my second birth and I learned from my first that I wanted more support to have a better experience. Kari delivered on that expectation by helping me stay calm and work through the pain, getting me much further before accepting the epidural than I could have gone on my own. She is an expert at tuning in to what mama needs and gently making suggestions and offering calming words when needed. If hubby can talk me into a 3rd baby I'll be hiring her again!
For starters - I can't recommend having a doula enough! It made a world of difference for us as a first time mom and dad. Second, if you are going to get a doula, I highly recommend Kari! She was a great fit for what we were looking for - we wanted someone knowledgeable about what was going to happen (again, first time mom here!) but also someone who would be calm, and have a sense of humor in the delivery room. We didn't take a lot of the birth classes while I was pregnant (we found them kinda boring) so Kari came over for dinner one night and answered all the questions my husband and I had about birth and what to expect. I went into labor late in the afternoon and my contractions didn't get bad until about midnight and Kari was responding to my texts all night long and arrived at the hospital when we did. She understood exactly what I wanted in the birth (wait as long as possible for the epidural, try not to get a c-section if possible, have skin-to-skin right away, etc) and she made sure that my voice was heard in the delivery room, espeically when things got a little hairy. She even took pictures of the whole experience so that we have those memories! One of the other great perks about Kari was that she checked in on me after the birth....its a bit odd to leave the hospital with a new baby and not have any dr's checking in on you to see how you're healing or how breastfeeding was going, so it was really nice and reassuring to have Kari check in on me and make sure everything was OK. Two thumbs up from this mama!
It was an absolute pleasure having Kari as our doula. Picking a doula is a rather big decision, this will be the person who will be coaching you up to and during childbirth after all! For us Kari was a perfect match. From the moment we met her she was comfortable and at ease and, as a result, this made both of us feel calm and relaxed. At the same time it was instantly apparent that she is incredibly knowledgeable about all things related to giving birth and babies and was able to address any questions or concerns we had leading up to the delivery. She was happy to talk us through everything and we never felt like we were overburdening her or being an inconvenience - she really loves what she does and wants to help her families in every way possible. In the end, my labor went so quickly that we didn't end up even calling Kari to attend, but it was such a burden off my husbands shoulders to know that she was there as back-up support. Kari visited us once we were settled back at home and, again, she was a fantastic source of information as we tried to figure out how to manage a newborn. I can't imagine going through the birthing process without having Kari as part of our support squad. If you get the opportunity to work with her, take it!
I decided I wanted a doula just a couple of weeks before my due date and met Kari only a few days before my son was born...and I'm so thankful I found her! I wasn't sure I would need a doula to deliver at a birth center with midwives, but it was absolutely the right choice to invite Kari to join my birth team. From our very first meeting, I was impressed by how personable and professional she is. Kari is a coach and a cheerleader; a gentle and caring soul, and a firm and steady support. She is so good at reading a situation and understanding what people need. She stayed by my side throughout my prolonged labor and also helped to guide and support my husband. I had a natural birth with back labor and three hours of pushing; there is no way to overstate the importance of Kari's support on that very long day! Her knowledge and experience gave her suggestions for me that were vital to achieving my goal of a natural birth. If I'm blessed with another pregnancy, Kari will be among the first to know so I can get on her calendar!
Our recent experience with Kari Meyers-Wheeler as our doula was absolutely amazing! After we found out we were pregnant, we began seeing the midwives at our hospital, and they recommended that we use a doula as well for extra support during the birthing experience. After the first phone call with Kari, we had a great understanding of what a doula is and what they do for you. We then had two consults where we got a more in depth explanation of how things work throughout the birthing process and were able to construct a perfect birth plan for me and my family. Due to unforseen circumstances, we were unable to have the natural birth we hoped for, and ended up having to have a scheduled C-section. We invited Kari to be with us in the operating room, which was an absolute blessing. Having her there to keep us informed of everything going on kept us at such ease, eliminating all surprises that could potentially come our way. She even stayed after birth for a few hours until we were ready for her to leave, and in that time she helped us settle in with the new baby and assisted with breastfeeding. Kari lived up to every one of our expectations plus some, and I highly recommend her for anyone looking for a doula. 5 out of 5 stars.
