It took six days in the hospital before our little boy was born, and we could not have gotten through it without the emotional and practical support Susie provided.
During our pregnancy, Susie held informational classes with two other doulas on a variety of topics. These sessions were invaluable in helping us prepare for birth and teaching us to advocate for ourselves with our doctors and nurses.
Susie’s guidance was always evidence-based. She also pulled from her vast experience as both a doula and mom, and she was open to whatever type of birth we desired.
In the hospital, when medical complications arose and things did not go as planned, Susie eased our anxiety and helped us navigate each decision with confidence. Without her calming presence, our birth experience would have been extremely stressful.
Susie’s assistance was invaluable throughout the entire process. From day one she ensured we were prepared, encouraged, and fully supported, and we cannot recommend her highly enough.
Susie s h o w e d u p for me and my husband on our second son's birthday this year (2018). Coming out of a traumatic birth experience with my first son, I knew I would need to "recruit allies" to improve my odds of a better experience with my second son. Some online research led me to a doula who recommended Susie as one of the very best in the state. Susie provided a very calming presence to this scared couple's birth experience along with physical support like a shoulder to hold and very helpful counter pressure during contractions. She was also a reliable and comforting on-call resource via text messages and phone calls for weeks leading up to the big day. If that wasn't enough, as our son was being born via c-section, she took pictures for us on my husband's phone that we will treasure forever. She was like a fairy godmother to us!
If anyone is considering hiring a birth doula, I highly recommend Susie Finnerty. She was extremely supportive throughout my pregnancy, especially when I developed a high risk condition. She always made time to talk, and the prenatal sessions were incredibly valuable. Her care during labor for both me and my husband was incredible! Having Susie there was one of the best decisions I made to ensure that I had a positive and empowering birth experience.
Meeting Susie was one of the greatest moments of my pregnancy. At 22 years old, single and overwheled by an unplanned pregnancy, I found myself praying for guidance as well as a hand to hold. Being pregnant was stressful enough, but at my 20 week ultrasound my little boy, Leo, was diagnosed with a severe neurological malformation called Hydrocephalus. Nothing in my life seemed to be in my favor until I met Susie. We met for coffee and immediately I felt comfortable in her presence and shared every detail of my complicated situation. Susie had experience with Leo's condition and eased my mind tremendously with her own testimony. She inspired me to be proactive and introduced me to a Hydrocephalus support group that welcomed me warmly. She gave me the support, encouragement, and direction I needed to experience this journey called motherhood. Every question, concern, emotional breakdown, she was there-no judgement-just love. I know my situation isnt the most common, but I can say without any hesitation that working with Susie was the greatest decision I couldve made. My prayers were answered with an amazing hand to hold through the scariest and most important moment of my life--the birth of my son Leo. My miracle baby. Leo was born cesarean at Brigham and womens (high risk) in Boston. Susie arrived before me! 4:30am she was at the registration office to meet me. Leo was born on October 30, 2015 at 8:18am. Susie held my hand as I heard my baby's cry for the first time. I will never forget that moment ever in my life. I am so blessed that I got to share it with Susie. I recommend Susie to any expecting mom especially high risk expecting moms. She went above and beyond what I expected a doula experience would be. After Leo was born he was in the NICU for two weeks. Susie visited us and supported me through the postpartum struggles I expected as well as the ones I didnt. Susie is great at what she does because she's doing what she was meant to do.
As soon as we met Susie, we knew we wanted to work with her. While her education, experience, and motives for being a birth doula all make her highly qualified, her communication style and personality really resonated with us. We knew she would help us understand our options and handle any curveballs that might come our way. We also felt she would be measured and tactful in the hospital setting - supporting us in our preferences while working amicably with medical staff.
Susie always made herself available, met us at our home, and offered to sit with me if my husband was working when my contractions began. She was invaluable in navigating our options and planning with my OB; when I was past my due date and hoped to avoid chemical induction, she recommended natural approaches to induce labor. I labored at home for 36 hrs, and texted with her all night. She interpreted what was going on with my body, made suggestions for rest, and advised us on when to go to the hospital.
Susie met us in the middle of the night and was every bit the calming presence we anticipated - helping with labor positions and breathing techniques. I believe I was able to avoid pitocin because of her. She and my husband took turns physically supporting me during delivery, particularly helpful because he had recently hurt his back. In all, I labored about 56 hrs and pushed for 4. It was an extremely challenging, exhausting journey, and we are convinced that things went as well as they did because of Susie. We’re so grateful she was there and would most definitely want her there if we were to do it again!
Susie is friendly, accommodating, non-judgmental, and wise beyond her years. She was a calming and informative resource during our pregnancy and her quiet confidence was reassuring and effective in the hospital. She simply is a lovely person and very, very good at what she does. We are so fortunate to have found her and recommend her whole-heartedly!
As hard as it was, my natural birth experience went incredibly well and I feel that Susie was one of the key reasons why it went as smoothly as it did.
During labor Susie was always present, yet never domineering or overpowering, and her contributions seemed to fit in seamlessly with the rest of the labor team (midwife + nurse). She was swift to increase my comfort whenever possible - be it through a change of position, an empowering statement, a pillow for my head, or a soothing touch - and she did so swiftly and minimal disturbance. Because she was so quick to take care of any and all external needs, I was able to put my full attention on coping with my contractions. She was also an incredible asset to my husband - after the birth he told me that it was Susie's stable and confident demeanor that helped him to stay calm through even the most intense moments of my labor process.
When I look back on my daughter's birth I am so grateful that Susie was part of my team. She will be a lucky asset to any mom!
Susie was amazing! Having my first baby, I really had no idea what to expect, and went doula shopping kind of late. I was actually in labor when we were scheduled to meet for the third time! I called her as soon as my water broke (which happened first for me) and she was so calming and helpful. My husband and I called her when labor started in the hospital and she was by our side in 15 minutes! She was very proactive in remembering what I wanted when my husband and I were totally lost in the experience. She had soothing techniques and was willing to get in the trenches with us, and by trenches I mean shower. She was there when I was sleeping to give my husband a moment to get fresh air and regroup. She was there to take some pictures of the coolest moment of my life so I can look back at them now. She was there after to tell me how amazing the whole thing was and help me with any questions I had. I really can't imagine how it would have happened without her and if I do it again, I would call her in a heartbeat. She really listened to me and really helped my husband a ton.
