A husband's perspective: Three years ago, my wife and I welcomed our first child into the world. We had heard of a doula but decided that we didn't need any extra help and that we were going to be just fine. We were so wrong. After my wife experienced a forty hour birth for our first child, bladder trauma, a botched epidural, and back labor, it took three years for my wife to get "pregnancy amnesia" and go for another child. This time we were going to be prepared! We met with multiple doulas around Juneau (all of which were fantastic and awesome people), and decided that Laura would be the best fit.

My wife went into labor around midnight with an epic breaking of the water. We called Laura who talked us through the first steps. Naturally we were a little over confidant and didn't read the baby books the second time around and needed a few reminders. By 4:00 AM we were all at the hospital for a nice 17 hour labor. Sandy again experienced back labor (if you don't know what this is, you don't want it). Laura was with us every step of the way. She had heating packs, candles, essential oils, music, and helped to massage and provide physical support to alleviate as much pain as possible, which I can assure you there was plenty. She was there to support me while I called to update family and check on my first child who was with friends. When we had to make difficult decisions such as getting pain medications and a vacuum to help bring the child out, Laura was knowledgeable and was able to tell us the pros and cons as needed. She respected our choices too. She worked as a team with the nurses and doctors and was such a wonderful addition to our experience.

While my wife's second birth was difficult, I can assure you that the process was significantly more enjoyable than the first and it was incredible to have such a solid doula in the delivery room. LAURA IS AWESOME!

Laura is very sweet and has a very calming presence. I had an incredibly long labor, nothing went as expected, and it ended in a C-Section but Laura was there by our sides the entire time. We had to make choices about interventions and Laura helped us to make sure we had all the information before deciding, but let us decide without influencing us either way or judging any of our decisions. She was particularly helpful to my husband as well, as this was our first baby and he was nervous and didn't know what to expect. He liked having someone there to help him figure out how to help me. Her postpartum visits were helpful too and she supported me through my emotions about my birth experience. I would hire Laura again in a heartbeat.
