Sara Kelly

I was somewhat apprehensive, or rather unconvinced by the benefits of a doula for a cesarean birth until I was faced with horrible back labor and a husband over an hour away who simply could not get to me. I knew and understood why they could be beneficial to vaginal birth, feeling they required so much work on behalf of the parent.  As my labor progressed it made even more sense. I was emotionally out of control prior to her arrival, my surgery kept being pushed off another hour, another thirty minutes, the nurses were busy, the doctors weren't explaining themselves well and when they came in the room I had no energy left to ask the right questions or what had been brewing in my head since the last go round.

I basically cried out for help in a group of women and lo and behold, Brittany came at the very last minute to support a stranger.  Ok, who does that?! We'd never met.  She didn't know my story, my history, etc. Brittany has got to be one of the sweetest women I've ever met, but she is also professional, well educated about birth, extremely plain spoken and well spoken at that, very strong in her role but no domineering personality - she's truly the type I believe anybody could get along with. Her encouragement through contractions helped me live through the worst - my husband is supportive but he had never been that reassuring and helpful. She brought essential oils, she had a ton of coping mechanisms to employee, but what worked best for me was distraction and extreme encouragement and she adapted to fit that bill.

In the end my husband arrived literally just as it was time for the c-section to begin, but had he not, I would have been proud and fulfilled to have her as my support person in the OR. I can't word this as eloquently as she deserves, but I'll spend my life appreciating her and recommending her to others.
