Malika is fantastic! We signed up for a couple of classes in our apartment. She took such care to ensure our questions were answered and provided hands-on demonstrations so my husband could learn how to help relieve discomfort during delivery. She also shared the philosophy that everything that happens during a delivery--pain and all--is to help our little girl into this world safely. We also learned how to soothe a baby! We feel pretty confident that our delivery and return home will go exactly how it is suppose to go.

Malika was a very important part of our birth team. She supported my husband and me through the birth of our first child, which was an unexpectedly early delivery (35 weeks) and long and grueling (36 hours). She offered caring, empathic and expert support, allowing my husband and mother to be there for me in the ways that they wanted to be and that I needed. She had a seemingly endless "bag of tricks" full of tools for comfort measures. She was an advocate for me as I gave birth in a hospital setting, asking questions of the medical professionals to ensure I was able to make the most informed decisions and prompting me to focus on taking an active role when I was thoroughly exhausted. When my son was admitted to the NICU, she visited me just to check that I was ok. Her pre-natal education sessons were also extremely useful. Malika was always easy to reach and we appreciated that she was able to be there for the birth despite it being outside the timeframe agreed to in our contract. This sent the very clear message that Malika goes above and beyond for her clients and places great value in her role on the birth team. I highly recommend her services.

I am really glad we had Malika as our doula. She was very supportive and knowledgeable throughout our time working together. I cannot imagine having done it without her!

Malika did two childbirth education sessions with us and came for one postpartum visit after our baby was born. She was wonderul and we highly recommend her services. Her childbirth classes were excellent. She tailored the class to our needs and the information and techniques she shared with us were invaluable during the birthing process. I wanted an unmedicated birth and using the techniques she taught us, I was able to make it through a very long labor with that support. The classes also gave my husband a lot more confidence because he felt he had hands on ways to help support me through labor. We chose to have my mom and sister present at our birth but if we had hired a doula to be present for labor, Malika would have been it! During her visit after the birth, she was a reassuring presence and helped us to feel confident in our new roles as parents. She has a calming presence and comes with a wealth of knowledge and experience. We highly recommend Malika!!!

I hired Malika as a postpartum doula. She was fabulous! She listened to my birth story and took care of the baby so my husband and I could get some sleep. She gave me a nice leg massage which was swollen and had nerve damage from the epidural. She helped me with breastfeeding and taught me some new holds. She brought with her a large container of special herbs for multiple sitz baths which have been extremly helpful in healing my birthing tears. She answered all of our questions and helped us get on our feet when we felt like we had no clue what we were doing. Malika was calm, comforting, knowledgable and much needed during the difficult first few days home. She has kept in contact since answering any questions and sending extra tips and advice. I highly recommend Malika as your doula and hope to use her again in the future!

Why every mama needs a doula like Malika:

1. The doctor/midwife is there to deliver your baby. That's it! The doula is there to comfort and care for you. From the moment we become pregnant we have to care for our babies, but often we neglect us. Your partner, especially if inexperienced, will try to help, but in most cases doesn't have a clue on how to help you or what to say. Having Malika present at my birth meant that someone was listening to me and constantly finding ways to make me more comfortable and confident to deliver.

2. Malika listened to my feedback and didn't take it personally if I wasn't as nice about it...because she understands it gets real during labor. When she was giving me an aromatherapy massage, I grew tired of the smell and told her to get rid of it and she immediately did so. She gets it!

3. I did not believe that my puny, non-athletic butt would be able to deliver without an epidural; thanks to Malika's encouragement, I did.

4. Caveat: All labor stories are not the same (I loved my experience and tell it to anyone who will listen). No matter what happens, especially if things go awry, you're going to need a friend and caretaker to help you through it. Malika will have your back--she's a pro. I don't know if she does this with everyone, but she came to my house to see the baby and give me some of her son's clothing. She's just good people.

RUSS WALL

Where do I begin, 10pm on a Saturday my wife calls and tells me she just hired a Doula after being at a Women's empowerment gathering as she was on her way home. I thought this was a bit irrational because my thoughts were that a Doula is just another sista-soldier in the deliver room telling everyone what to do, including me. So I was somewhat skeptical. However, we had a consultation with Malika and she gave me the most reassuring information I was convinced it couldn't hurt. So we went through with it, and 29 weeks into our pregnancy my wife had high risk complications and at 12am I called Malika telling her the news, and at that moment she changed my mindset 100%. She was so calming, caring, and prepared that I she gave me the confidence to go back in the hospital room and be the Superman my wife needed me to be. I been wearing the S on my chest since. Of course her skills in the delivery room are the absolute best but to take my perception of what a Doula is from one extreme to the next, is exactly what she did, with no intentional convincing. Our son is now a week old healthy and stress free. Thanks to our handy dandy Doula, my wife's scary situation was made fearless and an experience we wouldn't have any other way.

My experience with Malika was nothing short of amazing! I was referred to her by my sister and choosing to have her involved at my birth was the best decision I could have made. What I valued most about working with Malika was her availability and the relationship that she built with me and my husband throughout my pregnancy . Malika makes it her priority to make sure you are well informed so that YOU can make decisions about what happens with YOUR birth and delivery. I had some complications towards the end of my pregnancy that placed me on bedrest for several weeks and Malika went above and beyond to make sure I felt comfortable with all that was happening in the hospital and she made a point to visit and check in regularly throughout bedrest and during post partum. During my labor she made sure I was at ease by asking qurations, working with family, working with hospital staff and picking up on non-verbal cues for where I was experiencing pain and working with me to relax and find comfort in positioning . Malika is also a wealth of knowledge when it comes down to herbs and holistic methods to prepping for labor and post-partum, cloth diapering and breastfeeding. I am so grateful to have met Malika and included her in my birth , it has made the world of difference for me and my husband and I'm not sure how we would have managed without her! Thanks Malika =)

As a guy going in the delivery room it was intimidating, mainly because as guys we have no idea what our wives are experiencing. Wives know we have no idea so they let us have it. However, having a professional Doula like Malika Hook is the greatest thing for any guy. It takes the pressure off of you, you don't need to know everything, just follow Malika's instructions during the labor process. Thanks to Malika I was able to properly support my wife during labor, and she really appreciated my support. We was in out of the delivery room in record time, natural birth with a beautiful healthy baby boy. Consider a doula, consider Malika Hook its well worth it.
