The experience with Kim Walker was simply amazing! We were a bit hesitant at first fearing another person in the room of our first born child might take away from our experience as husband and wife, but the complete opposite occured. From the very beginning leading up to delivery, Kim provided encouragement and knowledge. She was always a text or phone call away in which I could ask any question, day or night. She not only helped me as a first time mom, but also my partner. They have a flood of emotions and excitement just as we do, in fact, he may have had more because he was relying on me to communicate my progress and feelings throughout the various stages of the pregnancy and delivery. Kim was such a trooper. She left her family in the middle of the night to meet us at the hospital at 4:00am. She prayed over us and reminded us of our plan just as we started the pitocin. She took care of all the small details each step of the way, as she reminded me to drink water, apply chapstick, stretch and move freely, etc. She documented the milestones and captured intimate photos that we will cherish for a lifetime. The feeling is indescribable and I cannot say enough good things about her and our experience. I find tremendous joy in knowing that she will be there to help our friends and family with their pregnancies. I greatly look forward to working with her again some day.
Kim was my doula for LO #2. After a natural birth at a (military) hospital on my own for #1, I knew I wanted some more support to do the same for #2, both so my husband didn't have to mediate between me and the hospital staff, and so that someone would be on my side and helping my partner to help me too. I'm so lucky I found Kim!!! We initially met up at the tour we were taking of one of the hospitals we were considering for #2's birth. She then came for a home visit, helped with all of the questions we had, and helped us to think about how to navigate writing our birth plan, in anticipation of the fact that we could end up with an on-call doctor from my OB's practice who was known for nearly always performing an episiotomy (and that person ended up being the one on call when we went in!). We called Kim on our way in that Sunday morning and she met us at the hospital within the hour. We all arrived around 7am and #2 arrived a little after noon. Kim was super great during the entire process. She also followed up afterwards and although we live a bit apart, I would now consider her a friend. She is lovely at doing this work and anyone would be lucky to have her.
I've known Kim for over ten years. So when I discovered I was pregnant in October 2015, she was one of the first people I told. It was a no-brainer that I would choose her to be my doula during our baby's delivery. She was awesome, staying in contact with me throughout my pregnancy, offering advice, information, encouragement and more. She was supportive of my choices and listened to my desires and hopes for my pregnancy and delivery. When we neared the end of the pregnancy, she checked in frequently, asking for updates after my checkups and reminded me to let her know if I needed anything or if any kind of progress was happening. We had two false alarms where we went to Vanderbilt (thinking I was in labor) and Kim accompanied us for one of those, even walking the streets of Nashville with me for an hour to see if that would help progress my labor. (It didn't, and we went home.) The third time my husband and I traveled to Nashville from our home in Gallatin 40 minutes away, it was TRUE labor. I had been having contractions since 6am that morning, but even though I had already had one natural birth, my second was completely different and I was unsure when we needed to leave for the hospital. Kim kept in constant contact with us that day, even giving us some tips over the phone to try to help progress my labor, which sounded kind of crazy but I trusted her and the wild (upside-down!!) position she had me labor through contractions in did the trick! She helped us decide when it was time to head to the hospital in time to deliver our son: I showed up at 9pm, was admitted at 10pm and he was born at 12:30am. I loved that I was able to labor at home most of the day, with comforts and freedoms I possibly wouldn't have had at the hospital. She was supportive, knowledgable, and hands-on during the birth, taking precious pictures for us immediately after delivery and recovery. Looking back, I can't imagine her not having been there. Thank you, Kim, for everything!
Kim assisted my husband and I with the birth of our son in May 2015. Honestly, prior to my pregnancy I had never considered having a doula. However, I heard Kim talking about the benefits of this service and even attended some classes with her, as we were both pregnant at the same time! My husband and I were still hesitant about having someone else in the room with us during labor and delivery, but we decided that it would be helpful to have someone with expertise “in our corner” should anything out of the ordinary arise. It ended up being the best decision. After the birth was over, my husband and I both were beyond thankful that we had Kim with us during the process!
Prior to the birth, Kim was willing and able to address any question or fear that I had. She also met with us to discuss in detail what role we wanted her to play and what would make me most comfortable. We had some concerns toward the end of pregnancy with my blood pressure, so induction became a very real option. Although I was nervous about it, Kim sat down and explained the detail of the induction process and helped ease my fears. After a doctor’s appointment one week prior to my scheduled induction, my doctor decided to go ahead and induce me that night. Kim immediately offered to arrive at the hospital whenever we wanted her to. She sat with me all night, kept me comfortable, communicated with the nurses about my progress, and really kept us informed about everything that was happening. Once it was time for the birth, Kim helped me push for 2 hours (and she was 7 months pregnant)! When the doctor had suggestions, we turned to Kim to get her opinion, and she calmly talked us through everything! She respected every request that we had and was a pleasure to work with! I don’t know what we would have done without her there…besides be a lot more stressed! We were grateful for her calm and caring demeanor throughout the entire process!
