My goal for this birth was a VBAC. I read every book I could get my hands on, talked with my midwife and other moms with VBACS. Eight weeks before my daughter's birth, my husband had shoulder surgery and the panic of getting tnrough a long labor alone kicked in.  I knew my husband would be my emotional support but given his physical condition, he'd need some support and guidance himself. Despite all my reading, I didn't feel confident and I was afraid my husband wouldnt't be able to keep me from asking for pain meds if he saw me in pain and felt helpless. So I set out to find help. My hospital offered a volunteer doula program. I signed up. I talked to people who had used doulas. They all raved about the doula. I decided I couldn't rely an the free service because there might be no one on call or I could end up with a total strager.

i interviewed several doulas before being matched with Laurel. She came to do a pre-natal visit in our home with my husband and I. She had all sorts of pain management advice but best of all, she read my husband and me and found the right techniques for us.  She helped me envision contractions and how to get through them.  Those two hours with Laurel prepared me and my husband for 6 hours of tolerable labor at home. By the time I got to the hospital, labor was so advanced that pain meds were out of the question, which was a blessing, since I was ready to beg for them.

My husband and I were exhausted when Laurel met us about 20 minutes later. I was ready to quit when I saw her. She looked at me and said you can do this, you are going to get your VBAC. I don't think I ever let go of her arm again and for the next 90 minutes she coaxed me and my husband to the end. My husband was so strong and confident thanks to Laurel's preparatory work. She talked me through the birth process and everything after until I had my little girl in my arms and was resting. Thanks to Laurel, I got a stress-free VBAC.

Laurel is a passionate, knowledgeable and caring Doula. I was personally most drawn to her own experiences becoming a mother, and believe that she brings a great understanding of the profound experience. She also really embodies the Birthing From Within philosophy, which I appreciated.
