We hired April to be the doula for our twins daughters birth. They were just born on Jan 11. Throughout my pregnancy April was very helpful and informative. I have 2 other children and had not hired a doula before. April was very kind and patient with us for all of our home visits. She showed kindness, compassion and interest in my husband and I, our older children and of course my twin pregnancy. Unfortunately I did end up having a c section because both babies were breech but April was still there for me to support me from my c section preop to my post op to breast feeding assistance. It was so nice to have someone there that was concerned with my well being and advocated for me.
I would definitely recommend April to my friends and family for their birth experience also.
At first I was very hesitant about going with having a Doula for my labor and delivery. I was nervous because I really didn't know what a Doula did to help with the labor. This was my fifth baby so I figured I could handle it by myself with my husband. But a friend of mine had told me that she had had an amazing experience with a doula being there for her so I wanted to look into it a little bit more. Then the Lord intervened and brought April to me through a good friend of mine and we met that way. We were literally introduced like oh you are pregnant here is your doula. It was quite humorous but looking back now I know she was a gift from the Lord. April is so loving and compassionate in what she does. It's a passion of hers and it comes from a truly serving heart. She was available to be there for me in any way possible. I was able to contact her about pre labor concerns and I felt comfortable entrusting her with my heart felt struggles and fears. When it was time to deliver she was willing to travel an hour away for me. She then stayed by me and my husband the whole way. April quickly became a part of our birthing team and I felt a true bond with her as if I have known her for years. She was so kind and helpful and in no way made me feel insecure. I was able to trust her completely because of her wisdom and experiences that she was able to relate to us through. I was in labor, a very complicated labor for over 30 hours and she stayed the entire time. It was complicated because I had to do a gentle induction due to me being a vbac and my baby being a cardiac baby that they had to closely monitor. I desperately wanted and needed to have a vaginal delivery. I was able to do so only because Aprils' massaging abilities and different positioning so I could not only progress but breath and relax through the contractions. I gave birth on my hands and knees unlike anytime before and because she had me do that I did not tear at all. Thank you April!
I used April to help with my hospital birth in March. It was a great choice to go with her. Her calm demenor was incredibly helpful during labor. She provided support beforehand (wanting to stay updated after each ob appointment, helping answer questions around terminology or procedures, etc.). During the labor itself, she helped provide ideas to handle the contractions (massage, trying various positions, laboring in the tub) and helped me stay as relaxed as possible. She really helped make my labor into a positive experience. You can tell she really cares and also loves what she does. I can't say enough how wonderful it was to have April with me in L&D.
April at A Gift of Love Doula Services was such a blessing to us and with her help, I was finally able to have the birth experience I have always wanted. This was baby number three for us and at first I felt a little silly having a doula since we had done it twice before, once almost completely natural with a few doses of IV pain medicine and the second time induced with pitocin but no other interventions. April listened to our desire to try to have no interventions this time around, and our hope to labor in positions outside of the hospital bed. On this side of labor and delivery, I can absolutely say it was one of the best decisions we ever made to have her help us welcome our little one into the world.
She kept in touch the last few weeks of my pregnancy with advice on getting labor started on its own. When labor did start, she was calm, supportive and patiently encouraged us to find the techniques and positions that best helped to cope with labor pains. Her gentle reminders to breath or relax kept me focused. She was a coach and cheerleader throughout, offering light taps on the shoulder when I would tense up through contractions, as well as voicing encouragement when I needed it most in the final stages. One of the greatest blessings was the feeling of truly partnering with my husband as she coached him in a variety of ways to help me make it through the process of bringing our baby into the world.
I would so recommend having a doula, especially to any woman considering having an intervention-free natural childbirth experience, and I cannot sing high enough praises for April in particular. Our labor and delivery nurses said it best when they commented that she had truly found her calling in her role as a doula.
We were so pleased to have April with us through the birth of our first child. Her calm and supportive demeanor was invaluable. She worked with our L&D nurse seamlessly to help us progress through a quick and easy labor and delivery. She was completely unphased by my "advanced maternal age," and helped give me the confidence to have an incredible birth experience. She answered every newbie question we had without judgment. :) My husband found her services to be invaluable as a first time dad who was very nervous! She gave him great ideas and helped him feel like an active and helpful participant. She even helped capture some amazing video and pictures. I really felt like she and our nurse helped us feel like a team working together to welcome our baby girl. Our only regret was that we didn't get to labor at home with her because my water broke and we were admitted quickly. April is simply wonderful and I have already recommended her to several friends. I wish we were having a second. My birth experience was so sweet and joyful. Truly an amazing day, with much thanks to April!!
