Katie was my doula for the birth of my first son in February 2016. Having Katie as my doula was one of the best decisions I could have made. I am a PA and so I knew the benefit of having a doula through the experiences of my patients and Katie did not disappoint! She was very professional but also very caring and her calming demeanor during labor was so helpful. I really felt like I had such a wonderful birth experience, and not because everything went perfectly either. I feel this way because even though we hit some bumps during the labor process I had Katie who acted as a sounding board for me and she was very informative and supportive, but her main goal was to make sure I was comfortable and happy with the direction of my care. Even when I changed my birth plan half way through labor I had nothing but support from her, which is what I needed. She quickly would reiterate what I original wanted and what I was stating currently to make sure she understood and gave me any additional information when needed then she would follow right through. I never felt like she was telling me what to do or pushed her agenda at all. She did exactly what she was supposed to do and that was support me as the laboring mother. My husband was also so thankful for her because she would answer his questions and just overall put him at ease with tips to help soothe me during contractions. He was able to really get involved in the birthing experience and he actually helped 'catch' our son! Katie also took amazing photos during the labor and delivery process that we will cherish forever. Because I am a medical provider I knew what I wanted and Katie really helped me to convey my wishes and to not back down, even when I was in some safe but vulnerable situations with decision making. Knowing she was in my corner really helped me stick to what I wanted for a safe healthy birth. There is no doubt that I would use Katie again for the births of my future children!

I've used Katie Shuler as a doula twice. I was a vbac (vaginal birth after cesarean) patient and thought I would not be able to deliver another baby vaginally. Katie informed me that it was my choice how I delivered, not the doctors.  She helped to educate me on natural childbirth which I believed was the best choice after having 2 previous births, one which was with an epidural and the other ending in a cesarean.  I know if Katie would not have been there with me, I would have had a planned cesarean.  She is well educated in natural childbirth as well as postpartum care for you and the baby. She is a wonderful mother of 7 children so she has lots of personal experience.  I would use her again if I were to have another baby. I believe doulas are very beneficial whether it is a first time birth or the fifth.
