I had Rebecca helping me for the birth of my second child. My first birth was a pretty stressful experience that ended in a c-section, and I wanted to get it right this time.
Well, in the end the birth itself went just like the first one, with the same result (the dilation stalled), but the whole thing still felt so much better.
It lasted a pretty long time, and she was always there for me, helping me, suggesting things to try to get things moving.
The massage felt great and really helped (I was going natural). And, apparently (I was not keeping track and was surprised when they told me) she paced the hospital halls with me for 4 hours. I think she also directed my husband on how to act, even if very subtly.
What I really appreciated was how she supported me: she discussed my options with me yet did not make me feel that there is a right and wrong way (as I had felt while talking to some other doulas). I really felt that no matter how I do, I will not have to feel that I failed her, and that was very important to me.
I had a very open mind about how I wanted my labor and delivery to go, but desired a doula to help me and my support team keep focused on the goal of having a healthy baby. My husband and I met with Rebecca and we were impressed with her knowledge and ability to put us at ease about the unknown we were going to encounter. Prior to going into labor, I checked in with Rebecca on a weekly basis. She eased the anxieties I had with no progression and sent me literature when a potential induction date was set.
Once I went into labor, Rebecca checked in with me often to check on progression and offered to come over whenever we were ready. Once we received the go ahead to head to the hospital she met us there. Immediately, she stepped in and helped to make me as comfortable as possible. She encouraged me to employ different methods to ease my discomfort and help the labor progress. After a long day, once it was time to begin pushing, I was extremely tired. She stood behind me and offered both vocal encouragement and physically lifted up my back with every push.
No matter what your goals for your birth are, we can't recommend Rebecca enough. I'm not sure I could have remained as relaxed as I did for as long as I did without her presence. She kept me on track and helped my support team by giving them the tools they needed to do the same.
