Cheryl was such a blessing to us. This was our second child. With our first child, the birth experience was not horrible, but it was pretty traumatic in terms of having a lack of support and trust in the natural process of birthing a child. It left me afraid and fearful of the whole birthing process. When we found out we were pregnant with our second child, I knew right away my first step was to find myself a doula. I ran across Cheryl's name on the doula match site. I was impressed by her from the beginning, and I knew I had to meet her. Right when we met each other we knew it was meant to be! From the moment we met we connected on even a Christian level. It was so comforting to know that I found a doula that had the same faith as me. I knew God had brought us together to help me through the fear that I had about birthing my second child.
Through our prenatal meetings I could feel the fear fall off of my shoulders. Cheryl made me feel confident in the fact that my body was made to do this! My body was capable and ready to birth my child. When the day came, she was such an amazing asset to have in the birthing room. She provided a calming and encouraging feeling for both my husband and I! I know I couldn't have done it without her. She was both amazing for practical support and also spirtitual support.
I believe with all of my heart that one of the main reasons why my birth story was one of healing and peace was because of Cheryl being my doula. Thank you, Cheryl, for all that you have done for my family!!
Hiring Cheryl was by far the best decision my husband and I made during our pregnancy. We initially planned to interview 3 doulas before making a decision, but after one meeting with Cheryl, we knew we found the one!! Cheryl mantains a soothing, calm, and empathic attitude through and through. She is an excellent source of information, too - which is invaluable for first-time parents!!
One of the highlights of workng with Cheryl (there are many) was in developing our birth plan. She brainstormed with us about our ideal birth experience, and then at every choice, provided alternatives that may come up and then brainstormed with us regarding which choice we'd make (given the issue was not an emergency). No matter what decision/choice we made, Cheryl was completely supportive and really made us feel in control of our birth experience. Oddly enough, when it came time to have baby, we ended up having to use our alternative choices as opposed to our original birth plan. I can honestly say without Cheryl taking the time to present those alternatives and helping us think about those alternatives, our birth experience would have been a disaster. Instead, we felt empowered, in control, and confident. Cheryl was there providing encouragement, and necessary soothing! Even our nurse in L&D was super appreciative of Cheryl's presence! She truly does provide all the support in the world to both parents.
She is an excellent person to bounce ideas off of, knows the community like the back of her hand and referred us to excellent pre-parenting classes. We HIGHLY recommend Cheryl for doula services and if we decide to take this adventure again, we will hire Cheryl without a doubt again.
I chose to work with a doula because I wanted to try and have an unmedicated birth. I should start this review by saying that I was successful. Not only did I have an unmedicated birth, I arrived at the hospital at 12:30 p.m. and had my healthy baby girl at 1 p.m., with my husband and our doula Cheryl Neel by my side! So, now, keep reading... When I met Cheryl, she was warm and welcoming and we felt comfortable with her right away. In our meetings we had before the birth, we worked on stretches and exercises to help with getting the baby into the right position for delivery, and also we worked on relaxation techniques so I could labor at home as long as possible. We also talked about goals for the delivery -- if something went wrong, what was most important to me?
Because of all this, I was able to do all of my labor at home, where I was comfortable (as comfortable as you can be!). I was on my couch, my bed, in my tub and in my shower, rather than in a hospital. Cheryl came to my home while I was in labor and helped me manage my contractions by using breath, guided imagery and the robozo scarf. By the time we got to the hospital it was time to push! I was able to acheive my goal of an unmedicated birth with no interventions, and when my little girl arrived we were both alert and excited to start our life together!
I plan to work with Cheryl if I have any other babies, and I would recommend you to work with Cheryl -- regardless of if you want a medicated, or unmedicated birth, she will help you acheive your birth goals, whatever they may be, and provide you support along the way!
I can’t say enough good things about our experience with Cheryl as our doula. Both my husband and I felt that she did an exceptional job and we feel incredibly grateful to have had Cheryl as our doula. Frankly, without Cheryl’s help, I’m fairly certain that the birth of our son would have gone quite different than we had hoped as we were aiming for a natural birth and I labored for several days.
From the moment that we met and hired her, she was incredibly warm, inviting and non-judgmental, as well as professional, prompt and knowledgeable. However, the real icing on the cake was that Cheryl skillfully provided support for both my husband and I before, during and after labor. She has the gift of intuition and used it to identify when to support us individually, or together as a team.
Our prenatal meetings not only helped educate us on various birthing positions and ways to deal with labor, but also provided an opportunity for us to get to know each other. When things got really tough after hours and hours of labor, it was really nice to be working with someone who we knew already and trusted. The three of us worked as a team—it made the experience so much more amazing. I highly recommend Cheryl!
My wife and I conducted a few interviews looking for the right doula for us. After talking with Cheryl for about 20 minutes, we both knew she was the perfect doula for us. She was knowledgeable, warm and caring.
Cheryl was always available to us pre-labor to answer any questions or concerns and her two pre-labor visits at our home were very informative and fun. Before working with Cheryl, I was a little nervous about my ability to provide the right support to my wife during her labor but Cheryl gave me the knowledge and the confidence to be best support partner I could be.
Our labor lasted about 70 hours and Cheryl was the reason we were able to stick to our birth plan and deliver our son naturally. For the first two days of labor, Cheryl was always available by phone, email and text. She gave us advice on positions and comfort measures. It was extremely reassuring to have Cheryl there to guide me and help my wife with her contractions over those two days. On the third day, we asked Cheryl come to our house, as my wife’s contractions were ramping up and we both felt that we needed her to be with us. Having Cheryl with us at our home helped me relax and to take a couple of breaks, which I sorely needed after not getting much sleep the last few days.
Once we got to the birth center, Cheryl continued to help and support the both of us. She also was able to take many pictures, which we are eternally grateful to have. I highly recommend Cheryl to anyone who is looking for a doula. If you are looking for a knowledgeable, warm and caring doula who will support both the mother and the partner, Cheryl is the doula for you.
After spending a long time considering whether or not to hire a doula, then even longer trying to find a handful in the Twin Cities area who were DONA qualified, experienced and who seemed like they may be a match to my personality, I came across Cheryl. Luckily she was available. From her well-organized website to her punctuality/responsiveness, she is most professional. She is also very knowledgable, empathetic and open-minded, without being too "alternative" in her approach, which was a big plus for me.
During our prenatal sessions she helped me fine-tune my very detailed birth plan, helping me keep realistic expectations yet encouraging me to voice my questions and issues which were important to me.
Eventually my birth did not go as planned, meaning that I needed medicatiion including for pain relief, which at the time I found emotionally challenging. Cheryl helped me remain more positive, feel somewhat in control, and aid the baby in her difficult journey. After the birth she was also very supportive, in many ways, from helping with establishing breastfeeding to taking photos and thinking of our nutritional needs when we were neglecting them. My husband and I both needed the emotional support, despite this not being our first child. She worked well with the medical staff and I felt she was genuinely concerned about our welfare the entire time, which was very reassuring. Most certainly a good investment in our opinion.
Cherly was such a valuable asset to this whole experience. She really helped me prepare for the birth and put thought behind vague ideas and quantify intangibles, such as my tolerance for pain, etc. She really helped me get an idea of what to expect overall and what techniques and tools were available to manage pain so I could spend as much time at home as possible. Then while in hospital, she really helped support my boyfriend. Everyone was so focused on me, that I am glad he had someone who was also looking out for him.
My husband, John and I decided relatively late in my pregnancy to use a doula and we could not have been more happy that Cheryl was there for us. She really helped us mentally and physically prepare for the unknown through a non-bias and non-judgmental frame of mind. It was very clear from the moment we met her that she was there to provide support and make sure our birth story brought us happiness no matter how the process of birth occurred. We didn’t fully understand the importance of that focus until after our daughter arrived. It was a long, complicated couple of days that was not part of our birth plan. J However, John and I know that we view our birth story in a positive light due in large part to Cheryl’s guidance.
I’m a stereotypical type A person who likes being in complete control. So, when it was suggested to me that we use a doula I laughed. However, what I didn’t realize is that good doulas like Cheryl aren’t there in the room to 1) take any control away from me, 2) take the place of my husband, or 3) just be in the way of private moments. She’s there to provide support to the mom and dad in whatever way that means to the parents and we were quite grateful that she did just that.
Cheryl was everything I needed in a doula. She is extremely attentive and caring. She made suggestions in areas I was struggling with throughout pregnancy, in a very supportive and non-judgemental manner. While I was in labor, she suggested different positions to help keep things moving along. She helped to comfort me in between contractions and keep me focused on the end goal. After our baby arrived, she came to our home the next day to answer some of my questions and to assist with nursing. Cheryl has a warmth and energy about her that can't be beat.
When my husband, Jason, and I found out we were expecting our first little one we knew we didn't want to travel this journey alone. We discovered Cheryl through my inlaws outreach search on our behalf and we are soo blessed that we had Cheryl as our doula!! Cheryl not only helped me physically prepare for childbirth, but also helped both my husband and myself emotionally and mentally prepare for what we were going to go through. Being a first time mommy I had many fears entering pregnancy, labor, and childbirth. Thanks to Cheryl and her excellent communication skills we faced and conquered each fear together!! I felt soo comfortable sharing my concerns and fears, as well as practicing various breathing and laboring techniques. I couldn't have had a better coach than Cheryl, helping me "train" for the big day....or should I say days??? During my 24+ plus labor and delivery, Cheryl did not leave my side and gave both Jason and I full support and encouragement the entire time. Bringing our daughter into the world is something I will never forget and I cannot thank Cheryl enough for being by my side every step of this amazing journey!!
