My husband and I hired Autumn for the birth of our baby girl in July 2016. I highly recommend working with her! She is very supportive, knowledgeable, compassionate and a grounding presence before during and after the labor process. Autumn met with us several times in preparation, and was great about checking-in via text to make sure I had the support I needed. She listened to me articulate the type of birth experience I wanted to have, and did an amazing job supporting me during the labor to help me achieve that experience as well as adjust when needed. I appreciated that she was also attentive to my husband’s experiences and how he wanted to engage and be supported during labor, as well as how he could best support me. She helped me change positions and talked me through some of the more difficult points in my labor.
Autumn is also experienced and very sensitive to people who come with traumatic histories. She is very aware of how that can impact the birthing experience, and helped me work through some of my concerns about that in advance. She was supportive around those issues during labor as well. I was so thankful to have her! I think her presence made the experience so much better, and I am glad that she was a part of bringing our baby into the world.
We worked with Autumn for the birth of our first child and couldn't be happier with our decision! Autumn was very supportive, knowledgeable, and calming. She was avaialble to answer any questions and provide support in the weeks and months leading up to the birth (which was extra helpful because I had several weeks of early labor before things got serious), and called or texted to check in if she hadn't heard from me in a while. I was impressed by how avaialble she was, and am super thankful for all the answered questions and relieved fears during that time.
She also met with me, my husband, and his sister (my best friend and a support person at the birth) to get to know us better and give us a crash course on childbirth before we were in the throws of it. This was immensly helpful for us all, and was wonderful that she took the extra time and energy to help us in this way.
When I did finally go into labor, Autumn was there when we needed her. She helped us all stay calm, took walks with me to get labor moving more, and was by my side the entire birth. She knew what was happening and explained the process. She helped me stay grounded during the painful contractions. I don't think I would have been able to meet my goal of a natural birth if it hadn't been for her care and support, but as it was I couldn't have asked for a better birth!
I highly recommend Autumn as a birth doula. The care she provided for me, my baby, and the rest of my family was incredible. We are so grateful to have had her at our daughter's birth!
My husband and I decided to hire Autumn for our first baby last month (June 2012). We are SO glad we did. Prior to "the day", she was great with answering questions and understanding our desires/hopes for birth. She was 100% available via phone before and even after we gave birth. Before we got to the hospital, Eric was able to help me through contractions while Autumn finished packing some last minute items that we needed for the hospital. It was great to have another person to assist us with the secondary items so that Eric could focus on me. Our goal was to go "natural". I ended up having a very long labor (27 hours) and Autumn's support for both myself and Eric was invaluable! I also had sciatic nerve pain in my left leg that increased with time and eventually was present with each contraction. It was painful but Autumn was extremely helpful and encouraging throughout the whole labor process. We also had to make some decisions and she proved to be an excellent sounding board. With the long labor and complications, I ended up getting an epidural. What I really appreciated about Autumn was that she completely respected my decision. In hiring a doula I was concerned that I'd receive some condemnation if I did decide to get some assistance with drugs, but it was far from true with her. She was great in encouraging me to stick with my goal, but she was also supportive of our decisions. Autumn guided me and Eric in making the right choices for ourselves and helped Eric to coach me. She also made sure Eric took care of himself and gave him breaks when he needed it (e.g.- extreme fatigue and hunger, nausea). I'm so grateful to Autumn. She knows what she's doing, and at the same time, she is kind, warm, and gentle. You won't regret hiring her!
We had a great experience using Autumn for our third birth. Autumn's support was really felt long before the labor began. She knew I had been under a lot of stress with my taking care of my mother who had cancer as well as dealing with my own health problems. Autumn faithfully checked in with me regarding my health, how I was feeling and gave recommendations on how to prepare for the birth. She reviewed the different stages of labor with my husband and me and gave us a handout illustrating what to expect during labor. The day of the labor my water broke and my midwife asked that I come in right away to the hospital and Autumn met us there right on time. At the hospital my labor slowed down and Autumn walked the halls with me, giving me the physical and mental assistance I needed. Once things moved into active labor she was a calming influence to both my husband and me. She worked quite well with the labor staff. She was always looking out for my own physical comfort. Once I was well into active labor I moved into a labor tub. She provided the coaching I needed to make it through transition and assisted my husband in hands on comfort measures to ease the pain. Once I was moved to the hospital bed to deliver it became apparent that the pushing would take longer than we had anticipated and she provided good advice on positions to try and was a constant encourager to me during a time I felt I couldn't continue. I do believe we would not have been able to have had a natural birth without her assistance. Afterwards, she came to visit us a few days after the birth (and called as well to check and see how things were going). She was very sincere in her concern and care for our entire family. I would highly recommend Autumn to other mothers looking for a doula who is very knowledgeable, compassionate, hard working and a calming influence on the entire process.
After a prolonged and disappointing labor experience with my first child, I had a lot of anxiety about my ability to get through another potentially tough labor. From the time that we first met with her to share the details of our difficult first birth and the hopes for our second, Autumn’s sincere empathy and specific suggestions released me from a lot of the dread and gave me hope that this birth could go more smoothly. Autumn was readily available to discuss the prelabor symptoms I was experiencing in the weeks leading up to the birth, and on the day of my actual labor, just checking in with her by phone enabled me to stay at home until exactly the right time I needed to go to the hospital. During labor, Autumn’s calming presence and discrete way of assessing our needs and offering suggestions gave me the ability to focus on my job without unnecessary worry or distraction. I truly believe that this second labor progressed more smoothly and quickly because I was able to relax in the knowledge that we had a wise and experienced partner there to help us, no matter what the outcome. And after an amazing intervention-free delivery, Autumn rejoiced with us that we now had a positive birth experience to remember.
Having Autumn as our doula was such a treat! She was so attentive to my needs, she provided a specific kind of support to our daughter's birth, that no one else could provide. This being my second natural birth, and first time having a doula, I would never go back. Though my husband is a great help, there's something very unique and special about having a "fellow mommy" by your bedside, a sympathetic ear, one who's knowledgeable and trained in the art of child-birth. She comforted me and took are of me, I felt like I could completely lean on her, the experience was absolutely beautiful.
My husband and I had the pleasure of having Autumn Brown serve as our doula (and childbirth class teacher) for the birth of our baby girl on 8/7/07. While we were first time parents, we felt very prepared for what was to come, thanks to what we learned in Autumn's class. Once Autumn arrived at the hospital, I think we both felt a lot of pressure off of us, because we knew that we had an experienced doula on our side to guide us through the birth of our child (and advocate for what we wanted with the hosptial staff). Just Autumn's calming presence alone was a huge help. Thankfully, everything went just great during childbirth! It was also very helpful to be able to contact Autumn in the days and weeks following Dasia's birth to ask for guidance and support that you cannot get from your doctor's office! I would highly recommend Autumn Brown as a doula!
Autumn was my doula for a home-birth/ VBAC (Vaginal Birth After C-section) and I was truly blessed to have here there! Her ever-gentle presence and positive encouragement really help me to experience birth the way I always hoped it would be- it was beautiful! She is a really sweet woman who is very gifted and is extremely passionate about what she does.
