Besides my husband, and the birth of our beautiful son, Kate was my favorite part of my second labor. Her presence was so calming and supportive, to both me and my husband. I gave birth to our second son at the Bryn Mawr Birth Center. I'm sure the midwives did a fine job catching Graeme, but Kate was the one who labored with us from 2 a.m. until 11 a.m. I honestly don't even remember the name of the midwife at the labor, because she came in only when I was pushing. Kate, on the other hand, was with us every step of the way.
My labor with Graeme was one of the best experiences of my life. It was my second labor, but first out of the hospital and without an epidural. Kate promised me that my own oxytocin would kick in and it would feel wonderful. Even as I went into labor, I told her I didn't believe her. But Kate clearly knew more about this process than I, and she was proven right a thousand times over! She helped me trust my own body, and my own instincts, and to let my body do what it needed to do to birth my baby. She was calm, and sweet and so supportive. I cherish that we were able to share such an intimate and wonderful experience. Graeme completed our family, but if I were to have another child, Kate would be the first person I called.
