Thank God I not only chose to have a doula for my birth experience but that I had Cara Watson with me. She made my labor and delivery the special and intimate event that I wanted.
Her personality and humor made us comfortable from the start and her knowledge and experience impressed us when we had questions or concerns. We had a multitude of questions and concerns, which she met with unending patience and grace.
The evening my water broke I called Cara right away and she was with my husband and I when my contractions started getting strong. She coached me through my breathing when I would lose my rhythm. When things were getting painful she suggested comfortable positions but respected my bodies natural instincts. She encouraged me and helped me stay focused.
I had expressed to Cara that I wanted to do the bulk of my labor at home and only go into the birth center when we were close to delivery. She helped me do that by keeping a close eye on my contractions and body language. Once she decided it was time to go in I trusted her instinct and experience.
Even though I had a midwife having a doula was essential since the midwife has her charting and other duties that keep her busy. Cara stayed with us overseeing that our birth went as close to our vision as possible.
Cara acted as a respectful and alert attendant, as well as an advocate with my family and my midwife. She recognized when I was in the transition stage of my labor and requested that my dilation be checked, since that had not been done. The midwife checked me and I was fully dilated and effaced. If Cara had not insisted that I be checked it is possible that I would of labored longer when I could have been actively pushing.
I will definitely use Cara again for our next birth and highly recommend her to anyone seeking a compassionate and knowledgeable doula.
