After meeting with several doulas, my husband and I chose Macy because of her birth philosophy of helping the mother trust her own instincts. Macy really came through for us during our birth, and was very supportive to me when things became difficult -it was nice to have her there as a constant support, and someone to hang on to.

I decided to seek a doula to assist with the birth of my second child. My first had been a scheduled c-section due to a stubborn breech baby, and I was determined to set myself up for a successful VBAC. I met with Macy, and discussed my vision of a drug-free, confident and supported labor and birth. I felt assured that she would support me and my desires for my birth.
When labor began, the pattern that emerged was a "prodromal" pattern. Over the course of several days my body never quit laboring, but the intervals would quicken for a few hours, followed by a period of a few slowed hours. Macy came to my house to help me labor through some more intense periods of this beginning labor, and walked the block with me several times. Throughout the long and eventually painful process, Macy encouraged me and reminded me of my goals to have a fear-free birth, to trust in my body, and to relax. She also was very helpful to my husband, in taking over when he was physically wearing out, and we noticed that she brings a calming presence with her.
Eventually, after laboring through the night and then multiple hours of close contractions and no lull between them, I was exhausted and discouraged. Macy was very supportive when I decided to vary from my birth plan and ask for an epidural. Even though I didn't exactly get the labor I had envisioned, I did successfully VBAC, and with minimal emotional distress despite a long and frustrating process. Macy's presence was invaluable to my ability to go with the flow and adjust my expectations to the reality of my situation.
The experience of having Macy as a doula helped me to start my journey as mother to this new person from a mentally and emotionally whole place rather than feeling battered and broken through my struggle to birth my baby. I am very grateful to have been so wonderfully supported.
