When I first met Zandra at the Baby Show, it was such a huge relief to find out there was someone out there offering exactly the kind of support I thought would be helpful. I wasn't worried about having a Doula for the labour and delivery, but I was worried about getting breast feeding established and figuring out how to care for my son once I got him home. All the information and classes out there seemed to concentrate so much on the birth, not on what happens afterwards!
While I was in the hospital, the lactation consultants did come in to visit for a few minutes every day, but they didn't have much time available to spend with me and they weren't able to get my son to latch on. Knowing that Zandra was coming to sit with me and help for a few hours was such a huge relief and I felt like we made big progress in establishing breastfeeding. After I got home, knowing Zandra was coming to help on day 2, I could relax and not be stressed about figuring everything out. They showed me how to give my son a bath while we were in the hospital, but running on only a few hours of sleep over 3 days, I couldn't remember anything they showed us! I didn't worry though, knowing Zandra would be coming to help with all of that.
Her continued visits were great for not only trouble shooting as things kept changing every few days and new challenges popped up, but also to have a chance to go off and have a hot bath and a good nap knowing my son was in good hands. Those little breaks were so helpful and what a smile I had on my face afterwards when I'd had a refreshing nap, and came back downstairs to have little things done that I was challenged to find the time to do, like catching up on laundry, sweeping the floors, and even something as small and silly as cleaning the microwave! I never would have realized how challenging it can be just to get every day things like that done!
