Tricia attended the births of our second and third children and I can't say enough about how helpful she was. As a dad, it was comforting to have Tricia there because it allowed me to do what I could to support my wife without worrying about every little detail. One concern I had about hiring a doula was that she would be seen as an obstacle or, worse yet, an adversary by the hospital staff, but Tricia had a great relationship with both our midwife and the nurses so that was never a problem. If my wife needed something, Tricia made it happen.
Additionally, her experience was invaluable. Our second child had a mild case of shoulder dystocia and I got pretty scared when his face turned purple immediately after birth and a bunch of nurses came rushing in. Understandably none of the nurses were focused on comforting me, but Tricia immediately pulled me aside and told me it was nothing serious. That one brief exchange made a world of difference to me.
Ultimately, Tricia provided peace of mind not only for my wife but for me too. If that's something you're looking for in a doula, then I highly recommend Tricia.
Tricia was my doula wjen I had my daughter in Dec of 2012. Tricia was amazing. She was so supportive and attentive. When I had questions she answered them and explained the answers in a way that was extremely easy to understand. She was very calming which helped a lot. Im extremely glad I had her there to help me with the birth of my first child. I would have been lost with out her! She will definitely be getting a call when baby number two comes :)
Tricia was our doula -- and, surprisingly, the sole birth-attendant -- for the impromptu home-birth of our son, Kiran, in May 2012.
I had a wonderful pre-birth experience with Tricia. Not only did we take her Hypnobirthing class (which made us both feel calm, empowered, and ready for whatever birth we ended up with), but Tricia was available on the phone or by email for all kinds of information and concerns leading up to the big day. She was always able to offer a well-grounded mix of information based on her personal experiences, her professional experiences, and her extensive academic knowledge/training, and always gave us room to make decisions and choices for ourselves.
When I went into labor, our birth plan kind of went out the window when I progressed quite suddenly from back pain every 15 minutes to full contractions every 3 minutes -- a switch so sudden that we found ourselves unable to go to the hospital. Tricia calmly took everything in stride and drove straight to our house (from another birth, no less), where she helped us prepare for a water birth in our own bathroom. She treated the situation as a surprise, not an emergency, and with poise and joy welcomed our son into the world 15 minutes after reaching our apartment.
She then helped us navigate the confusing experience of the non-delivery of the placenta, the consequent ambulance ride to the wrong hospital, and eventually the manual extraction of the placenta. She stayed with us through the morning, several hours after everyone was fine and she could have understandably begged off. She gave us her fullest presence and care, despite the fact that she had been up for who-knows-how-long, and was herself pregnant at the time.
I can't imagine a more stable, knowledgeable, supportive presence, and I am so thankful that we made the choice to hire her for our birth.
Tricia was my doula for the birth of my first and only child back in 2010. I knew when I got pregnant that I wanted/needed a doula and fate brought me to Tricia. She was so knowledgeable during our prenatal visit that we knew we wanted her with us every step of the way. My husband is a wonderful man but clueless when it comes to all things pregnancy and childbirth related. He wanted to be there to support me but was so happy to know that Tricia would be there to guide him through the whole process. Unfortunately I had to be induced so I was stuck in bed with IV's and a constant pit drip. To make matters worse, I was experiencing back labor and Tricia was there encouraging me and massaging me for hours. She even brought a TENS unit which was my saving grace. I couldn't have gotten through it without it. Her support didn't end there. I had her on speed dial/text for the first 3 months of my son's life. She just had so much experience and knowledge about breastfeeding and newborn care. She was so wonderful and helpful, she inspired me to pursue the same path and become a doula. It is truly an amazing "job" and I owe it all to her for showing me what a doula really is.
Tricia was my doula for my son's birth 2 years ago. She was so supportive and helpful throughout the entire process. I was in labor for over 60 hours and Tricia was amazing during the entire experience. By the time I started to push, I was exhausted and didn't think I could do it, but Tricia was a true coach and a tremendous help for both me and my husband. She stayed by my side and kept me sane while I pushed for 5 hours. I don't think I could have done it without her! Tricia is the best, I highly recommend her.
Tricia has been the doula at several of my clients' births, supporting moms with doula support and Hypnobirthing technique. Her labor support is unmatched and I always feel like laboring moms are in the best of hands. She puts her moms first and diplomatically advocates for a family's preferences while creating a warm, calm environment for labor.
It is a true gift when a provider becomes overjoyed to know her client is working with Tricia.
Tricia was just the calm, present, thoughtful person we needed through our looooooooooooong drawn out 4-day labor for our daughter. She could tell what I needed from her and what was working for me. I felt comfortable with her from the moment we met, and in the last months before the birth she helped me again and again with information and resources specific to my situation. She was always helpful and gentle, and never pushy. She really understood me, my husband, and what we wanted, what was important to us, and I really appreciate that. Just her quiet, steady presence helped keep me calm through what turned into a three-ring cirus (bait'n'switch OB, etc.) at the hospital, and I was able to make choices with a clear head. She helped me think through my options and reminded me about information I was aware of, but unable to keep track of or remember given the stressful information. It was just what I needed. As a result, I don't have any regrets about what we chose to do, even though the situation was far from optimal. My husband felt the same. We are both so, so glad Tricia was there through everything with us!
I think she is flexible enough to be whatever a laboring mom needs. For me that was a low-key but encouraging presence. For others, it might be more hands-on and vocal (there were some moments when that was what I needed, and she was great). One of the best parts about having Tricia as your doula is that she pays attention to you as a unique individual and adapts to the situation and the people involved, and that no matter what else is going on, she stays right there with you. She also has a wealth of knowledge and experience to draw on, which makes for just the right blend of in-the-moment sympathy and clear critical thinking. I can't recommend her highly enough.
Tricia was my doula in 2010 with the vaginal (I say this because w/out Tricia and my amazing doc it would have surely been a c-section!) birth of my boy/girl twins and again at the c-section (figures! lol) birth of my 8 month old daughter. Not only is Tricia a wealth of knowledge in all things pregnancy, birth and after care but the peace of mind you and your spouse/partner experience just by her presence is invaluable. If we decide to and are blessed enough to have a fourth I will move heaven and earth to make sure Tricia is there!
Tricia was our doula and I can honestly say that I don't know what we would have done without her. She was there with us every step of the way, and helped advocate our birthing plan. She helped with everything; communicating with the cavalcade of hospital staff, keeping us hydrated, calming me down when my nerves where frazzled. Tricia was great!
Tricia Fitzgerald played an indispensable role in the birth of our child. For more than 24 hours, Tricia remained by my wife, supporting her through her contractions and keeping up her spirits. As the labor progressed and it became clear that a natural, non-interventive birth was not going to be possible, Tricia talked us through our options and helped us process the situation in a non-judgmental way. Throughout, Tricia was a calm and reassuring presence for both of us. She was also an outstanding and effective advocate.
For example, when my wife had to be placed on continuous electronic monitoring, Tricia saw to it that she was connected to a wireless system, so that she could still freely move about the room. When my wife inquired about a birthing ball, Tricia made sure she got one. Tricia politely reminded nurses of my wife’s desire for a quiet environment. Also, when one of the nurses said that she had been told to administer Pitocin, Tricia gently, but firmly, suggested that the nurse check with our primary care provider again before doing so, because that was not our wish.
I shudder to think what those hours would have been like without Tricia’s knowledge and support. If my wife and I choose to have another child, we both hope that Tricia will be available to help us.
In 2007 I was pregnant with my first child. I knew I wanted a doula to help guide me through an unmedicated childbirth that I anticipated in having. I was referred to Tricia through a mutual friend. I took my HypnoBirthing class through Tricia as well, which further aided in my obtaining the birth I wanted. I know my 32 hour labor would have gone a different way without the guidance and support of Tricia to keep me calm and connected. My birthing experience was everything I hoped it would be: a positive one, which will be with me for a lifetime.
I first met Tricia while researching childbirth classes and found Hypnoborthing. While I had no real experience with meditation or hypnosis, I really felt this method was my best opportunity to have a natural childbirth. After taking her class and learning the importance of having a true, unbiased advocate at my side while in labor, I decided to ask her to be the person there with me. I now believe every woman deserves to have someone as educated and compassionate as Tricia at her side while in labor. I was able to have 2 uncomplicated, natural deliveries, one at home, with her love and support. Do not hesitate to hire a doula, they are worth their weight in gold! My husband and will never be able to repay Tricia for all she has done for us!
I HIGHLY recommend Tricia as a doula! AND my OB was highly impressed... he raved about her performance the next day!
Tricia was my doula for my 3rd "high risk" pregnancy and birth. My 2nd birth was traumatic as I lost my son in my second trimester. I knew that I needed A LOT of support during my 3rd pregnancy and birth; Tricia was there doing exactly that. She helped me remain calm throughout the pregnancy and was there when I had questions. She was on call for me when I had a couple pre-term labor scares and was admitted to the hospital. When the time came, Tricia was AMAZING during the delivery of my daughter! She knew exactly how to support me and understood my needs. She kept me calm during labor and delivery and helped me make decisions during labor. I had a phenomenal birth experience much to the fact that Tricia was there. As I said, my OB could not say enough about Tricia. He stated that she "was one of the best doulas I've ever seen." Yes, an OB said that!
Oh, did I mention that she also supported me for hours at the hospital during a "false labor" session a couple of days before the actual birth?
I can't say enough about Tricia and her doula skills! She is amazing!!!
We had a traumatic first birth experience with pre-eclampsia and HELLP Syndrome that resulted in the premature delivery of our first child at 29 weeks. I had desperately wanted a natural delivery with her, but I ended up with a very medicalized birth and an emergency c-section. I contacted Tricia for my second birth. I believed that part of my healing from the first birth experience, aside from therapy with someone specializing in birth trauma, was to try again for the experience I wanted. Tricia came to meet us and I hired her on the spot. I didn't need to look any further. She is incredibly knowledgeable, and I felt like I had known her forever. My daughter was in her lap within 5 minutes, which was good enough for me.
Tricia was phenomenal in helping me mentally prepare for the birth. She also met my doctor, who supported my plans for a VBAC, and I felt very comfortable that I had a wonderful team to care for me during my labor/delivery. When I went 10 days past due, she was calm and reassuring when everyone else was panicking and when I kept not dilating at appointments ("of course you're not-this is your first vaginal delivery. You'll likely not dilate until you're in labor!" she said, and like usual, was right!). Finally the day came. She knew exactly what to do and exactly when to do it to make me progress (using water, aromatherapy, touch, etc.). She gauged correctly where I was in labor several times. When I hit transition (20 minutes later confirmed by an MD friend) she called it and we headed off to the hospital at 7 cm. She stood ground for me when someone suggested breaking my water (didn't need it!), and I had a beautiful baby girl four hours after arriving at the hospital. My NATURAL VBAC delivery was due in no small part to Tricia and her expert, kind care. I will be calling her for baby #3 for a repeat! I would never birth again without a doula, and I would never choose any other doula :-)
Tricia is an amazing woman and Doula! She was there during the hardiest time in my life.... Pregnancy was a time of emotional and physical turmoil for me and was there unconditionally, The premature birth of my son who was born at 27 weeks gestation was something that I was nowhere able to handle emotionally and my postpartum depression was so severe and so hard on me and my husband that we both relied on her on many occasions. She is the true embodiment of what a doula should be, kind, loving, epithetic, a friend to laugh with a shoulder to cry on and ear to listen and the most encouraging person I know. She brings a calm in crisis that is amazing beyond words. The night of my son's birth she actually stayed up all night to watch me because I was so over medicated I was having trouble breathing, she watched the pulse oximeter all night to make sure I was okay when the nurses failed to do their job. She was not only there for me, my husband and my son but also my mom! I am a doula myself and aspire to emulate her in my own work as a doula! I would recommend her to anyone any time, she is a true asset to have in birth.
I contacted Tricia on the recommendation of a good friend. At the time we first talked, I was really indecisive about whether to try a VBAC. Tricia was so well informed about VBACs and able to help me come to the decision to give it a shot. I ended up going into labor the morning of my scheduled c-section. My contractions got pretty powerful fairly quickly. I had wanted to stay home as long as possible, however, my dr office really pressured me to get admitted. They were pretty nervous about the VBAC. So Tricia ended up meeting me at Edward hospital. She was absolutely marvlous. I would not have gotten as far as I did, naturally. Tricia was such a calming and gentle presence, encouraging me through out labor. When, at 8 cm, I decided to get an epidural, Tricia was able to help me feel ok about my change in plans. In the end, my dear baby boy was face-up and did not come naturally,
Tricia is an amazing doula. She was an indespensible part of my pregnancy and birthing experience. As somewhat young first time parents, my husband and I were very nervous, but Tricia was there every step of the way to calm our fears and anxieties. My husband calls her our birthing soul mate! I ended up having a very long labor due to my son being face up, and if Tricia weren't there to support me,I know I would have ended up in a c-section, instead of having the natural birth that I wanted. I will absolutely never have another baby without Tricia by my side! Work overtime, sell some stuff, do whatever you have to do to have Tricia as your doula! You will never regret it.
Tricia helped with the home birth of my son back in March 2009. She was amazing. I had not hired a doula for the birth of my first child and I totally regret it. Thank goodness I found Tricia. We met months before the birth so I could talk about what I wanted out of the experience and some of my hesitations about home birth. Tricia was totally supportive of my choices and made me feel like the task I was undertaking was absolutely doable - just the fact that she had the confidence that I could do it made me feel confident!
At the birth, I felt immediately comfortable with her. Her experience with her own births and those of many other women enabled her to lock into the experience easily and fully. She talked me through my contractions by encouraging me to breath and relax. Later my husband said that she was kind of like a yoga teacher/doula combination because of her calming effect. She had excellent suggestions for different positions to try, which made my labor go so much more quickly. Ultimately, the birth of my son was one of the most satisfying, enjoyable and spiritual experiences of my life and I have Tricia to thank for it. Thank you!
Tricia was my doula for the birth of my son at West Suburban Hospital. The birth took a very long 2 days and Tricia stayed by my side the whole time. My husband and I said many times that we did not know what we would have done without her! She was truely on our team! I ended up having a c-section, and tricia helped me to adjust to the idea. My husband was very shocked when I asked for her instead of him in the recovery room!! on a scale of 1-10 she's a 15!! She really went above and beyond what any other doula would do.
Tricia was my doula for my first homebirth (3rd birth) and for my 4th birth (hospital birth).
She is calm, patient, proactive and understanding. Her presence was immensely helpful--she helped me believe in myself that I could experience a drug free birth. She listened to what I wanted and anticipated what I needed when I did not know what I wanted. At the hospital she advocated for me with the medical staff, firmly yet kindly. She supported my husband as he helped me--but did not take his place.
Simply having her with me, someone who had previously birthed babies and been with other women giving birth, was invaluable. Having a doula who does not leave or need to go check on other people made labor calmer for me. Tricia's presence during labor and delivery is like having a trusted friend who knows what she is doing supporting you during an amazing, important time in your life.
